For Beam Steering, Gating, Driving Grids and Other Capacitive (High Impedance) Loads
The PVX-41XX and PVM series pulse generators and modular pulsers are specifically designed to drive capacitive loads such as deflection plates and extraction grids. When applied to these elements in a time-of-flight mass spectroscopy instrument or a linear accelerator, these pulses can be used for electron or ion beam steering, gating, deflection, or extraction.
In addition to time-of-flight and linear accelerator applications, these pulsers can be used to drive any high impedance, capacitive load, including:
- Pockels cells and Q switches in LASER systems,
- Microchannel plates,
- Photomultiplier tubes,
- Control grids of power vacuum tubes, and
- Acoustic transducers
The PVX and PVM series pulse generators offer a number of benefits over other "high voltage switch" solutions:
- The PVX and PVM pulsers are half-bridge (totem-pole) designs, offering equally fast pulse rise and fall times;
- They are specifically designed to drive high impedance, capacitive loads such as grids, plates, Pockels cells and Q switches. They offer very high fidelity pulses, with fast rise and fall times and virtually no over-shoot, under-shoot or ringing;
- They are shipped with all mating connectors and cables; and can be connected directly to the load. They do not require series or shunt resistors, impedance-matching networks between the pulse generator and the load or external energy storage capacitors. These are all handled within the PVX pulse generator;
- The PVX and PVM series pulse generators have extensive circuitry to protect both the load and pulse generator in the event of an over-current condition (a short or an arc) at the load or in the interconnect cable. If an over-current condition is detected, the output of the pulse generator is terminated for approximately 1 millisecond, protecting the load, interconnect cables and the PVX pulse generator itself. The PVX automatically resets itself after the 1 millisecond period. If a fault is again detected, this shut-down/reset cycle will continue, otherwise the pulse generator will continue to operate as it did prior to the fault;
- The PVX and PVM pulsers use discrete, commercially-available components. They use air as their insulating medium, and the circuitry is not potted (encapsulated). In the unlikely event that a PVX pulser is damaged, it can be repaired to the component level;
- The PVX and PVM pulsers are all solid state direct-coupled designs,offering pulse widths to DC. Some competing products are vacuum tube-based switches, or use transformers that degrade pulse fidelity, and limit pulse width and/or maximum frequency;
